Sergei Marchenko is a Research Associate Professor at the Geophysical Institute, studying permafrost. Sergei completed his education in Russia, earning a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Physical Geography. He worked as an engineer in Kazakhstan and Yakutsk, and in 1993 he was named Senior Scientist at the Yakutsk Permafrost Institute.

Sergei came to the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2003, serving as a Visiting Research Scholar until his appointment as a Research Associate Professor at the Geophysical Institute in 2006. An expert on permafrost in Central Asia as well as Alaska, Sergei studies the interaction between climate and permafrost in the Arctic; permafrost formation, distribution, and evolution; and the modeling of permafrost dynamics.
